Call for Clean Water Partnership 

H&M group and WWF have worked together on water stewardship since 2011, reducing the water impacts within the H&M group supply chain as well as creating programmes for wider change in key sourcing regions.

Now they are calling on other textiles brands to join global industry efforts on water stewardship, in particular joining efforts to work ‘beyond the factory fence’ — creating multi-stakeholder solutions to water issues and supporting stronger water governance (policy, incentives and enforcement) in high water risk regions.

Adidas x Stella McCartney

Adidas has revealed a new clothing line with Stella McCartney which aims to focus on the importance of protecting nature.

In keeping with Adidas’s pledge to increase sustainability, the new AW18 line will include eco-friendly fabrics such as recycled polyester, organic cotton, and recycled ocean plastic.

Stella McCartney said: “More than half of our apparel and a third of our footwear in AW18 are made with eco-innovative and recycled materials.”

Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) and Organic Cotton Accelerator have announced that they will work closely together to make sustainable cotton mainstream. C&A has partnered with Fashion For Good to achieve a Cradle to Cradle Certified™ GOLD denim jeans, providing a world's class recipe on how to design the 'most sustainable pair of jeans'. Reebok is exploring sneakers' material mixing corn and cotton together. Let's keep the good work flowing...

Roadmap to sustainable fashion

116 members of the German Partnership for Sustainable Textiles have submitted their roadmaps outlining concrete steps for increasing sustainability in textile supply chains. Brands include Adidas, H&M, Primark and Hugo Boss.

UN unveiled a film on sustainable fashion

Repair, Clean and Reuse 

Recognising that consumers want to reduce their environmental impact, retailers innovate and set a new trend where they are buying back their used products for resale to consumers.


We can see for example The North Face Renewed, “a collection of refurbished products for consumers who want to access affordable gear.” All Renewed items originated as returned, defective or damaged apparel from The North Face’s distribution center. The company then relies on its partners at The Renewal Workshop to professionally clean and repair products, including clothing for men and women, before listing them for resale.

Assessing your material footprint

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) has announced an update to its Higg Materials Sustainability Index (Higg MSI) tool that will enable the apparel, footwear, and textile industry to “more effectively” assess the environmental impact of materials used in its global manufacturing.


"With the opportunity to play a key role in determining a product's sustainability performance, being a designer today is really exciting," SAC chief executive Jason Kibbey said in a press release. "With the Higg MSI, product designers can access an incredible amount of information, and then use it to significantly reduce environmental impacts of materials production.”

‘Spotify for fashion’ and ‘Uber for clothes’

WRAP, the UK's resource efficiency agency, has identified leasing as an innovative business model that gives clothes a longer service life, while reducing material use and carbon dioxide emissions. A recent survey conducted by Westfield Shopping Centre in London also proposed that clothing rental would become a key future trend.

The possible value of the clothing rental market in the UK is predicted to be £923m and the model is already well-established for certain items, such as dinner jackets and wedding suits for men. Despite this, there are currently just a handful of fashion companies that have adopted a leasing model.

Levi's Sustainable Fashion

Levi's sustainability plan

It’s work that Levi’s now plans to scale up as it aims for a new goal–cutting its emissions as a company in line with the Paris climate agreement, as the latest corporation to set targets under the Science Based Targets Initiative, a nonprofit-led project that helps companies set climate goals. By 2025, the company plans to use 100% renewable energy in all of its own facilities, cut emissions in those buildings by 90% compared to Levi’s footprint in 2016 and–in a move no company has tried before–it also plans to cut the emissions in its supply chain by 40%.

Luxury fashion to lead sustainability efforts


BSR’s Responsible Luxury Initiative (ReLI) has launched a new report that offers a roadmap toward a resilient luxury sector and highlights three opportunities for luxury companies to invest in future success. The report, Disrupting Luxury: Creating Resilient Businesses in Times of Rapid Change, was developed in coordination and dialogue with ReLI members, who include Cartier, Chanel, Harvey Nichols Group plc, The Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels Limited, IWC Schaffhausen, Kering, LVMH Moët Hennessy – Louis Vuitton S.A., Michael Kors Holdings Limited,, OTB, PVH Corp., Ralph Lauren, Richemont International S.A., Swarovski, and Tiffany & Co.
